Opened in late 2006, this expansive childrens home provides a loving and stable home for approximately 220 orphans and abandoned children with HIV/AIDS. Located on 18 acres in the province of Kampong Speu (33kms from Phnom Penh), the home provides a full range of housing, nutritional, health and educational needs to these precious children.
The need is so huge that children are referred to NHCC by government-run hospitals, INGOs and NGOs, at an average rate of five per month.
The home currently comprises of 24 houses, in which up to eight children live with a care-giving couple. Houses are constructed in groups of three, sharing a common kitchen and eating area in the centre, in order to encourage an extended-family atmosphere.
Volunteers are typically engaged in educational and support activities such as teaching (or assisting in teaching) English in the pre-school or nursery, teach computers, help in the large gardens, help the in-house nurse. All volunteers are encouraged to join in the children’s volleyball, basketball, soccer and ping pong games, as well as initiating their own activities.
The home is extensive – comprising of twenty-four houses for the children and caregivers, 9 kitchens, an office, clinic, classrooms, sporting facilities, and a volunteer on-site accommodation centre.
